Summary

“Season 1” contains 3 videos with training sessions of fundamental resistor information.
=> I recommend for all to watch these 3 videos to learn a bit more about resistors and their temperature behaviour.
The videos also include fundamental information about  Leaded and SMD resistors, as well as information about “Ambient Temperature & Terminal Part Temperature”, “Derating curves”, etc.

This season 2 also contains 3 videos but these videos are more interesting for the design centers of our customers.
– Session 1 explains the effect of temperature decrease when attaching thermocouples to the component which temp. should be measured.

New Information on the KOA Website (RoHS, REACH)

We would like to inform you, that KOA Corporation is now ready to offer and to promote the new, improved varistor series “NV73S”.

The NV73S has been released as a replacement for the large NV73 products (NV73 2E, NV73 2J, NV73 2L). The large NV73 products NV73 2E, NV73 2J, NV73 2L were already classified as “NRND” since 20.02.2023. The products have now been moved to the “EOL” pages at the website.

The new datasheet of the NV73S is available here, and the datasheet to the updated pages of the smaller parts of the NV73 series here. It now only shows 1J, 2A and 2B (the sizes 2E, 2J and 2L have been deleted).

Advantages of new NV73S compared to the old NV73
– Lower height dimensions
– Higher Max. Energy (J)
– Higher Max. Peak Current Ip (A)
– Improved pricing

Features and Benefits vs. Competition:
– Low voltage SMD varistor with similar performance than leaded disk varistors

– NV73S2E(1210) allows more than 2 times max. peak current vs. competition, providing greater surge protection and more operation. It is possible to propose a downsizing from size 1812.
– NV73S2J(1812) allows 1.5 times higher max. peak current vs. competition, providing greater surge protection and more operation.
– NV73S2L(2020) allows ~ 2 times higher max. peak current vs. competition, providing greater surge protection and more operation.

HVD P08 – Thin Film Network Resistors for High Voltage Divide:

KOA Corporation has updated the datasheet of the above mentioned series on our global webpage.

The old version of our current HVD (24pin) was moved from “Products” to the “End of life product information” information page. Currently, there is no tentative EOL Date for Q24 products of HVD.

=> In case of new designs, the new HVDP08 is recommended, even if it has the same or even better specification than the old HVDQ24.

The number of terminals was changed from 24 pins to 8 pins. (P/N: HVDP08)
The resistance value range (11.5MΩ or less) of the existing HVDQ24 (24 pin) is also supported by the new HVDP08

High-voltage voltage divider circuits of xEV (BMS, DC / DC converter, inverter)
Especially for high-precision voltage detection applications

– Quality samples for R-values up to 51MΩ are available
– Final production review for mass production is scheduled for “End of October 2022”

KOA has done further developments and improvements for the HSG73P series:

This HSG73P**AT series has high heat resistance up to +175°C and passed 1000 cycles of -55°C/+175°C heat shock tests (delta R less than 1% – refer to “Performance”).
The performance of temperature cycling is improved by using conductive resin as stress relaxation layer in the bottom inner electrode (suitable for high-strength-solders as well as SAC-solders).
The product is endurable up to 10% of its rated power at the maximum operating temperature of +175°C and is suitable for the applications under the harsh environment, like an integrated mechanical/electrical in-vehicle unit.
HSG73P**AT can replace other components of bigger case size, hence to reduce mounting space.
HSG73P**T is recommended in case the temperature requirement is +155°C or higher or in case the requirement of more rated power that the existing products (SG73P, etc.).
HSG73P**AT  is a good choice in case of more heat shock resistance is required up to +175°C (see “rapid change of temperature characteristics” up to +175°C / 1000 cycles).

Target Applications / Examples:
Automotive: ECUs: Power control unit, gear box electronics, various sensors around the engine, Mechatronic integration of motor drive unit etc.
Industrial: Devices operated under high temperature (power modules, high temperature electronics, power supplies, measuring equipment), peripherals of power devices, excavators etc.

NRND Shunts and alternative products:

From the end of September on, KOA will not recommended for new design these parts: PSA, PSB, PSI, PSE TLR3A (1, 2, 3, 4 milliohm), TLR1E (10 milliohm) TLRH2A(10 milliohm). Here you can find the detailed overview, which KOA parts are offered as alternative.

KOA Corporation has successfully tested and approved the RS73 and RS73_RT parts in the size 1J (0603) and now specifies higher ratings.

=> OLD: 0.125W @ +70°C ambient (+125°C terminal part temperature), 75V Max, Working Voltage  
=> NEW: 0.2W @ +85°C ambient (+125°C terminal part temperature), 100V Max, Working Voltage 


KOA will stop the production / discontinue CN* network series:

Due to the aging of our production equipment and the demand trend of our products, we have decided that it is difficult to introduce new resources, that is the reason why we will discontinue the production of CN* series, CN-A series, CN-K series, CN-RT series,
CN-KRT series, CND series, CND-K series and CNB series. You can download here the “Production Obsolete Notification Form“. 


Thin Film Chip Network for automotive:

For automotive and other critical applications KOA recommend to use our RTY-series (also RTX, RNX).

Advantages of these series are:
– standard package of semiconductors (SOT-23)
– high mounting reliability
– in case of thermal shock, the lead terminals ease the mechanical stress.

Since all other sizes of the RN73 series are already plated in-house, we will add in-house plating of the RN731ET to increase capacity. Effective date of the change is December 29. 2017.
